In 2007 Mondi South Africa established Mondi Zimele, a 100% Mondi Limited owned subsidiary, with the aim of accelerating and facilitating sustainable economic empowerment in the value chains of their operations. Particular emphasis was to be placed on small and medium sized businesses.

The concept for Mondi Zimele was derived from and closely modeled on Anglo American’s innovative and successful approach to enterprise development and entrepreneurship in South Africa, Anglo Zimele.

Since 1989 Anglo Zimele has played a significant role in black economic empowerment (BEE), growing into a substantial SME development partner and creating sustainable wealth in the unique South African environment.

Paying tribute to the Anglo Zimele entrepreneurs in 2005, President Thabo Mbeki said, “This effort has answered the question I have been asking what it is that we can do to assist in the expansion of the South African economy through SME development and BEE.”

The word Zimele is derived from the African languages Zulu and Xhosa and is translated as “to be independent” or “to stand on one’s own feet”.
